In the first part of the current project related with establishing a beekeeping tourism center near Nyungwe National park, we explored the introduction, the mission and vision, the concept of the projects, the main project activities and the project’s contribution to responsible tourism.

Today we explore the market and competition, the finance and budget of the project, the SWOT analysis, reporting and benchmarking and the conclusion.

Market and Competitors

Market overview

Tourism is one of the key pillars of Rwanda’s economy, contributing significantly to the country’s GDP, employment and foreign exchange earnings. According to the Rwanda development Board (2023), tourism contribution Rwanda’s GDP is about 10% and this percentage is set to increase overtime. In 2023 alone, tourism generated over 620 million US Dollars.  Moreover, Rwanda is renowned for its sustainable tourism initiatives, with attraction such the Volcanoes National Park, Akagera National Park and Nyungwe National Park attracting thousands of international visitors. According to the (National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda, 2024), only from January up to June 2024 Rwanda recorded the total number of international arrivals of 74,251 arriving by air and 233,818 arriving by land.

The Government of Rwanda, through Rwanda development Board (RDB) has actively invested and promoted nature based tourism, making it a an important industry for investors and entrepreneurs. Nyungwe National Park is one of Rwanda’s top tourist destinations, attracting visitors with its rich biodiversity, chimpanzee trekking, canopy walk and other natural attractions. The park’s reputation as a pristine conservation area and a UNESCO listed sites enhances its appeal to many travelers (Nyungwe National Park, 2024).  In addition, the park’s proximity to the main road Huye-Nyamagabe-Nyamasheke-Rusizi makes it ideal and reachable tourism areas for many travelers.

The areas surrounding Nyungwe National Park are well positioned for tourism related businesses, especially apitourism due to their favorable climate and strategic location allowing visitors’ access. The region has strong history of beekeeping, with local communities practicing traditional and modern beekeeping and honey production activities (Hakizimana, 2018). The availability of vast green landscapes, forests and farmlands makes the region a perfect environment for bee colony and beekeeping tourism experiences.

Moreover, the Huye-Nyamagabe-Nyamasheke-Rusizi main road plays a crucial role in facilitation tourism and economic activities in the region. This route connects major tourist hubs, including the Ethnographic Museum of Rwanda and other important cultural sites located in Huye District, Nyungwe National Park located in Nyamagabe and Nyamasheke Districts and the way to the Lake Kivu in Nyamasheke and Rusizi districts, making it a key corridor for both local and international travelers. The steady movement of people along this road presents business opportunities for tourism services, including apitourism that will be offered by our company, NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER.

 Competition analysis

Rwanda’s tourism industry is highly competitive, with numerous companies specializing in cultural heritage, wildlife conservation and eco-tourism. According to the Rwanda development Board (2024), in Rwanda there are 250 licensed and registered tour operators and travel agents, which offer different services related with receiving travelers and guiding them in different destinations. Apart from registered companies, there are also community-based cooperatives that also engage in tourism activities. Many of these tour operators offer guided visits to Nyungwe National Park, focusing on chimpanzee trekking, birdwatching and the famous canopy walk.  These tour operators organizes tour guides in different sites related to local traditions, historical and cultural sites in different areas of the southern provinces like in Nyanza, Huye and Nyamagabe. While these companies offer diverse tourism experiences, none currently focus on apitourism or beekeeping-based tourism, presenting a unique market opportunity for our business, NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER.

In the areas surrounding Nyungwe National Park, several beekeeping cooperatives operate, but most of them are only engaged in honey production and selling. However, their focus is solely on production and commercial sales of honey. None of them has a structured tourism activity related to beekeeping. While beekeeping is well-established, it has not been leveraged as a tourist attraction, giving NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER an advantage in introducing a unique apitourism experience in Nyungwe surrounding regions.

The potential competitors for NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER are tour operators that organize tours guides within Nyungwe National Park who might also later be interested in apitourism. Additionally, the available beekeepers cooperatives could become future competitors if they expand into tourism activities.

To stay competitive, NYUNGWE APITUORISM CENTER will focus on promoting unique visitors experience, combining education, conservation and experience sharing in beekeeping activities. We also establish partnership with existing tour operators, beekeepers cooperatives in order to create mutual business opportunities while reducing competitive risks.

Finance

The finance section of a business plan is one of the most essential components of a plan. It helps businesses achieve their goals by indicating necessary funding. It also highlights the main financial points including investment capital, sales, profits, cash flow and return on investment (REILLY, D.J., 2000).

For the purpose of staring and running our project, we outlined the startup costs, the running costs and the revenues and profits projections. Additionally we describe the financial sustainability of NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER Ltd.

Financial sustainability

Financial stability refers to the capacity of a business entity to earn revenue or get a return on an investment that covers all expenses and make a profit. The financial sustainability assesses whether investing resources in the business will generate sufficient return for investors (WallStreetMojo, 2023).

According to (IGI Global, 2015) ensuring the long-term financial sustainability of a project is critical factor for the success of any project as it help to assess if the project will meet all its financial requirements.  At NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER we will ensure financial sustainability by multiplying and diversifying our income sources like tour guides in the bee farm, honey production and selling and the selling of artistic products. According to Otieno, Munyua & Odero-Wanga (2021), income diversification is one of the best ways to ensure financial sustainability as it insures the projects does not depend on a single source of revenue.

Furthermore, to enhance financial sustainability, we will seek strategic partnership and funding opportunities. We will collaborate with environmental NGOs, Government tourism agencies and conservation organizations, which will help secure grants and sponsorship for our projects. According to Chrysler (2023), strategic partnerships play an essential role in the implementation and business sustainability of a business as they help to put together public and private stakeholders towards the realization of the project.

Additionally, we will insure financial sustainability by ensuring our service digitalization and online presence. By developing a website and online platforms to book our services and selling our products, we will attract customers globally.  Finally, the project will implement transparent budgeting and financial tracking systems to monitor income and expenses effectively. Regular financial audits will be conducted to ensure accountability and prevent mismanagement.

SWOT analysis

According to Peterdy K. (2024), SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. A SWOT analysis in a framework to help assess and understand the internal and external forces that may create opportunities and risks for a business.

In the context of our project, the SWOT  analysis is focused on factors that may lead to the success or failure for a company offering apitourism services in Rwanda, especially in Nyamagabe District, near Nyungwe National Park.

Reporting and benchmarking

Benchmarking in business means measuring your company’s quality, performance and growth by analyzing the processes and procedures of others. The Ultimate goal of benchmarking is continuous improvement, something all businesses should aim for (Fallon, N., 2023).

According to the Indeed Editorial Team, 2024), reporting and benchmarking are essential for the success of any business, providing a clear framework for evaluating performance and implementing continuous improvements.

As proposed by Fallon, N. (2023), at NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER we will focus on regular reporting to assess visitor’s engagement, financial performance, sustainability efforts and community impact. We will produce monthly and annual reports containing data on key performance indicators like number of visitors, revenues from tours and honey sales and partnership formed. Transparent reporting will help attract investors and NGO’s funding, ensuring the sustainability and profitability of our project.

Benchmarking will involve comparing NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER with similar eco-tourism initiatives in Rwanda, in Africa and globally. By analyzing their business models, pricing strategies, visitors experience and marketing tactics, valuable lessons will be gained to improve our project’s operations.

Continuous improvement through feedback collection and performance analysis will be done to ensure long-term success.  As proposed by Indeed Editorial Team (2024), implementing customer satisfaction surveys, social media review and stakeholders meetings will provide insights on areas of improvements in our project. Comparing performance data overtime will also help in setting realistic growth targets and refining business strategies.

Conclusion

NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER project blends eco-tourism and sustainable beekeeping to create a unique and impactful business model. By leveraging the rich biodiversity and attractiveness of Nyungwe National Park, this initiative has potential to attract local and international tourists, offering them unforgettable experience in beekeeping, honey production and environment conservation through beekeeping. The project not only promotes biodiversity conservation, but also provides economic opportunities for local communities through job creation, skill development and honey based products sales.

Despite its strong potential for success, the project faces challenges such as high initial investment, market awareness, seasonal tourism fluctuation and beekeeping challenged. However, these challenges can be addressed through strategic partnerships, effective marketing and continuous effective management. Implementing a robust business model with diversified revenues streams such as guided tours in honey farms, honey sales; educational workshops will ensure financial sustainability.  By integrating reporting and benchmarking, the project will rack performance metrics, sustainability impact and customer satisfaction to ensure continuous improvement.

NYUNGWE APITOURISM CENTER represents an innovative and sustainable approach to tourism and beekeeping, merging economic growth with environmental conservation. With proper planning, stakeholder engagement and effective marketing, this project has the potential to become a prominent apitourism destination in Rwanda and in Africa, attracting nature lovers, beekeeping lovers, researchers and conservationists.
